The House of Hades is the 4th installment in the 5 book long series known as The Heroes of Olympus. The book takes off right after the last book ends, with two of our heroes, Percy and Annabeth quite literally falling into hell, or at least the Greek mythos equivalent of hell, known as Tartarus. The book changes perspective every couple of chapters, allowing us to interpret many character's thoughts of one event. The rest of the main characters, being Leo, Frank, Piper, Hazel, and Jason, are faced with the plight of retrieving their friends from Tartarus, aboard their mighty sky vessel, the Argo II (pictured right). The Argo II is quite literally a second Argo, the ship led by the Greek hero Jason on his quest to find the golden ram. It also has a golden dragon head. That breathes fire. Because of course it does. The book functions as a modern-day retelling of the legends of yore, also being a fusion of Greek and Roman mythology. The main characters are what is known as "Demigods", or the children of a God and a mortal. This gives them powers that are related to their Godly parent. For example, Percy, a son of Poseidon, can both breathe under water and control water itself. The events chronicled in this book follow Percy and Annabeth's journey through Tartarus, where the air is acid, the water is fire, the ground is broken glass, and their lifelong enemies are being reborn before their eyes, while their friends on the surface must fight countless foes and surpass countless odds to meet them at the Doors of Death.
